A century-long tradition of economic inquiry
From its founding meeting in Calcutta to its nationwide scholarly network today, IEA has supported informed debate on India’s economy and public policy.
Our History
The Indian Economic Association was established in December 1917 through the initiative of Charles Joseph Hamilton, then Minto Professor of Economics at Calcutta University, together with a group of economists and teachers.
As one of India’s oldest professional associations in the social sciences, IEA has hosted annual conferences across the country and created a durable forum for theoretical work, applied research and policy discussion. Its presidential tradition includes many leading economists who influenced academic thought and national policymaking.
Mission
IEA promotes professional competence in economics through teaching, training, research, consultation, scholarly publishing and constructive public discussion. It encourages members to apply their knowledge in service of society.
President’s Message
Prof. Adya Prasad Pandey describes IEA as a vibrant democratic forum connecting established scholars and young professionals. Annual conferences allow economists to present selected papers, exchange methods and provide useful knowledge to researchers and policymakers.
